Ms. Smiddy’s Scoop
Tonight is one of those evenings when my heart will "melt" several times throughout the evening. It is our annual Sweetheart Dance from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. Our multi-purpose room, normally used for school lunch and P.E., will be transformed into a softly lit, magical ballroom for all of our "couples" to enjoy an evening out with their sweetheart. To be very honest, I wasn't a fan of the idea of a dance for
elementary students when the PTO first suggested this event 4 years ago. I thought the kids would just be running all over the place, and some were for awhile, and I had to say something to them, just like I will
probably have to say something to a few students tonight. On the other hand, my heart will melt when I see the daddy's that will pick up their little girls and hold them to slow dance, or the little boys in their dress clothes who ask their moms to dance with them. That is what this evening is about -- a special evening for a parent or substitute parent with their child. I have been converted. I hope my grandchildren will get to have a Father/Daughter Mother/Son Sweetheart Dance when they are in school.
Next week will be the "Kiss A Pig" PTO fundraiser. Each morning from 7:45-8:10, piggy bank jars with staff pictures on them will be set out in the front hallway. Students are welcome to drop coins or dollars into the jar of the staff member whom they would like to see kiss a pig (yes, a real pig) at our assembly on March 3rd. The staff member with the most money in their piggy bank will be the winner and get to kiss the pig! I hope your child will be able to participate. P.S. Please let your child know that it is okay if Ms. Smiddy's jar remains empty each day.
On a more serious note, we are starting to get information regarding our new state assessment (still called MAP) the students will take this Spring. We will be sending home more information closer to time; however, I wanted to let 5th grade parents know that their students will begin testing on April 20th, as they have a longer testing schedule than the other grade levels (3, 4, and 6). I just wanted to give you a heads-up, so that you could plan doctor, dentist, and other appointments prior to the 20th, or more into May. Thank you for your consideration. As I said, more information will be given later.
Have a wonderful weekend! Please tell your students NO Snow Dances this weekend!!! They may not agree with me, but we don't need any more snow days!
St. Joseph Mustangs Reading Program:
Anytime between now and April 17, 2015 students may turn in a St. Joseph Mustangs Hall of Fame Reading log to earn prizes! The first log earns them a free ticket to the Mustangs home opener, a coupon for a free kid's meal at Chick-Fil-A, an Aspen Leaf coupon, and a free carousal ride at East Hills Mall.
Any additional forms earn them another ticket to the home opener. Please remember that students need to read books on their level and are supposed to count books from February - April 17th.
Monday, March 2- is Dr. Seuss Day. Wear a favorite hat or a Dr. Seuss style hat to celebrate Seuss Day!
Friday, March 6: Relax and Read - Missouri Reading Day. Wear your PJs to school
Fuel Up to Play 60
The next challenge is for your class to get the most miles for February. The class that has the most miles will have breakfast that I make myself in
the classroom. Teachers can fill out logs to help their class too.
The last challenge is for 50% of the school to turn in a log. If that challenge is met, I will wear a dress 3 days in a row to school.
Also, staff there is a challenge for you. The staff member that has the most miles in February I will give him/her an extra plan time.
Once students have met the goal of 100 miles for Fuel Up to Play 60 they will get to join me at the 100 mile table for lunch once a month.
Lastly, February 13th is Red Day at Mid-Buchanan in honor of February being Heart Month. Students and Staff, let’s wear our red and get moving.
